Priest explains: Scapulars, medals not magic

JARO, Iloilo, July 18, 2014—With many Filipino Catholics wearing scapulars and medals, not really knowing what they are for, a priest in Iloilo recently stressed their true purpose — and it has nothing to do with magic.
“One has to understand their use. Just getting hold of the promise without understanding its content and demands can easily lead them to be treated as amulets and bodily decorations,” Monsignor Alejandro P. Esperancilla, who serves as special assistant for liturgical affairs of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles in Jaro explained.
Many Filipinos wear scapulars and holy medals without adequately understanding their purpose, says Monsignor Alejandro P. Esperancilla (File photo)

Imitating Mary
According to Esperancilla, the wearing of medals and scapulars should be an expression that the faithful want to “place themselves under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary”.
He pointed out, “This will necessarily include the desire to imitate her life of being totally in the service of God.”
Esperancilla shared that before it acquired its present miniature form, the original scapular—the “Brown Scapular”—evolved from the habit (religious vestment) of the Carmelite Order, whose members, beginning with St. Simon Stock, were largely responsible for popularizing the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, their patroness, through this sacramental.
It means that it is a badge of affiliation with that religious community, and that its wearer “shares in the spirit of that community”.

More than promises
“It is a sign that includes not just privileges but also the obligation to live according to the rule and values of that community, namely, simplicity in dress, behavior and life, penance and mortification, prayer, hospitality and charity to the less fortunate,” Esperancilla said.
With the often unrealistic expectations many wearers have of these sacramentals, the shrine liturgist urged to “de-emphasize” the promises attached to them, emphasizing instead the spirit behind them, which is to become “imitators of our Blessed Mother in her life of service to her Son, Jesus Christ”.
“Only then can the promises be fulfilled,” Esperancilla noted.
He stressed that we must remember that scapulars and medals are sacramentals of the church and serious effort should be made to use them correctly.

“People need to be instructed in the wearing of medals and scapulars,” Esperancilla said. (Raymond A. Sebastián with reports from Fr. Mickey Cardenas)

Individual Differences!!!

What is mean to you a word "Individual Differences" ?
For me these word is a kind of differences to a person being acquired.

For examples;

Someone is good but not all people are good, Someone is active but others are not active, Someone is pious but others are not pious, Someone is generous but other are not generous, Someone is honest but others are not.
Yes, we are different to each other but that is not a guarantee who you are to the people it is only a mere attraction to them but we need to do such thing sincerely and with dignity. We become different by choosing what is right and the value of it to the society. Stand yourself !!!!

There’s no winning in life

For the longest time, I believed in winning. I believed that in any competition, someone has to lose so that one can win. I believed in winning since my early exposures in competitions and quiz bees way back in the 90s. Oh, God. When we compete, the goal is always to win.
winner 300x300 Theres no winning in lifeAnd why not? The winners always take it all—the trophy, the medals, the honor. And if you go home losing, it’s depressing, it’s painful, it’s just one of those things we can’t really be proud of. Of course, people would pacify your sadness by telling you, it’s OK. You can try again next time.
We believe them. So we would join the competition again. This time, we believed we are better and therefore would have a greater chance of winning. Regardless of the result, people would always have something to say whether we win or lose.
All our lives, we are made to believe in winning. That, should we want to really be happy, we have to win. They didn’t really require us to win big. Winning is sometimes enough. Just win because losing isn’t good. Losing means you are weak, unprepared, disorganised. You are less when you lose, they say.
So every now wants to win. Whatever happens, the goal is to win. Yes, sometimes whatever it takes.
Today, allow me to say what I discovered. In life, there’s no winning. There’s only learning. We can’t win in life. But we can only learn.
When we were still in pre-school, we were told to pass to enter the primary school. We did. And then we were told to go through another six years so we can go to high school. We did. And then we were told to study for another four years or more so we can either get a job or start our own business. For some, they were asked to take a Master’s or Doctor’s degree and they did.
In all those years, have we won? Oh, yes. We certainly did. We won in different levels. But we won. We got our diplomas and marched during the graduation rites. We made it.
But have you also noticed that this is a never-ending game? That whatever you do, how much you believe you are winning, you are always on to another game? That however good and worthy you have become, you will end up starting a brand new level again. That every now and then, something new is about to begin and that this life is a never-ending game?
I saw it.
It may appear that we are winning but in truth, we are not. We are just learning. And even losers get the same chance to learn. That explains why some losers now become winners of tomorrow and some winners now become losers in the future.
I’m writing this not because I don’t want people to win and that I encourage people to lose. I simply want to emphasise that in this life, in this game, don’t focus on winning. Focus on learning because that’s all there is in this life. Whatever we do, we will have to take another game and that will happen until our last day.
We can’t win in life. And we can’t finish the game alive. But every day in every game, big or small, we have the opportunity to learn. You don’t have to win to be happy. You just have to learn. Maybe that’s enough reason to move on—knowing that you’ve learned and you can face another game with the lessons in your heart.

Feel Your Feelings And Let Go

The Article below is coming from its source: http://bosanchez.ph/feel-your-feelings-and-let-go/

“How are you, Phillip?” I asked a friend one day.

Phillip retorted, “I’m fine.  My son died in an accident, my house burned down, my wife ran away with another man, I lost my job last week, and my doctor told me I have lung cancer.  Aside from that, I’m okay.”

Phillip is the model stoic.  I’ve exaggerated his calamities to give you a picture of a wrong way of handling negative emotions: to deny them and cover up our pain.

I’m not surprised that Phillip has cancer.  Why?  Because any inner pain that we don’t allow ourselves to feel will manifest itself through tumors, hypertension, heart disease, muscle pains, ulcers.  Because of this, I have a fascinating hunch: I bet that if I can only help people acknowledge and feel their hidden emotions of anger, fear, worry, and grief, I’d probably be able to remove 50% of their physical diseases.

Because our bodies are blueprints of our emotional life.

Sandra on the other hand is Phillip’s opposite.

“How are you, Sandra?” I asked her one day.

“Oh Bo,” she crumpled down on my shoulder, “I don’t know what to do with my life.  Everyone hates me.  No one loves me!”

Do I cry with her?  The first time, yes.  But the eighty-sixth time?

I’ve gotten used to her drama.  Because every time I see Sandra, she always breaks down into a river of tears.  Only to find out that her world was about to end because a favorite shirt got damaged in the washing machine or her dog didn’t wag his tail at her!

The good news is that between Phillip and Sandra, there’s a middle path: When we respect our negative emotions as friends, not monsters, as teachers, not masters.  Negative emotions are the windows of our soul—and they will teach us about who we are and what exactly we need from God.

In a word, emotions need to be felt.  And then, unlike Sandra, you can let go.  Because you cannot let go what you have not held!   There are no short cuts!  You can’t go around them, over them, or skip them.  The only way is through the negative emotion.

My suggestion is simple.

Whenever you feel sad or lonely or depressed or angry or fearful—don’t run away from it, cover it up with busyness or entertainment, or worse, silence the negative feeling with an addiction.  (All addictions, whether to drink, food, bulimia, shopping, or sex, is an escape from feelings we don’t want to face.)    My prescription: Whenever you feel a negative emotion, be alone in a room and just sit down with it and feel it.  Don’t judge it, criticize it, intellectualize it, explain it away.  Allow yourself to feel the pain.  It’s okay.  (Feelings are not sin.  Check out the Psalms if you don’t believe me!)   Accompany it—breathe into it—and after awhile, you’ll feel the anger or fear or sadness lose it’s urgency and power.   Allow God to tenderly embrace you in your pain.

And then, at the right time, you can let go.

When you get healed of 50% of your diseases, I’ll bill you. J

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

Pope Francis reveals he used to work as a bar bouncer

pope-francis-internal.jpg
Nov. 27, 2013: Pope Francis waves as he conducts his weekly general audience at St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.Reuters
It’s common knowledge that St. Peter guards the pearly gates. But what many people might not know is Pope Francis used to guard the door at a bar in Argentina.
That’s right: Pope Francis used to be a bar bouncer.
The 76-year-old pontiff disclosed his previous vocation in a parish visit to the church of San Cirillo Alessandrino in a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Rome on Sunday, the Catholic News Service reported.
The nugget from Francis’ past, when he used to be known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was disclosed during a four-hour conversation, in which the pope also mentioned he used to sweep floors and run tests in a chemical laboratory as a teenager.
The anecdote is yet another example of Francis’ growing reputation as a “pope of the people.” Since ascending to the papacy in March, Francis has eschewed such trappings as the Popemobile, washed the feet of prisoners and has shown a penchant for showing up unannounced wherever the faithful gather.
Last month, photos of Francis cradling and kissing the head of a man covered with tumors went viral, providing a powerful image of a pope dedicated to helping the poor.
In turn, Francis’ popularity has sparked renewed interest in the church. A recent survey by sociologist Massimo Introvigne of Catholic clergy in Italy noted an increase in the numbers attending Mass and confession since Francis’ election. In Italy alone, more than 100,000 are “returning,” often after decades of non-attendance.
Fox News’ Courtney Walsh contributed to this report.
